Advancing Pomegranate Science
The ICAR-National Research Centre on Pomegranate has pursued targeted research to strengthen pomegranate cultivation across India. Scientists and technical teams at the centre have contributed to innovations in crop improvement, pest and disease management, post-harvest technology, and production practices tailored to diverse agro-climatic zones.
The National Research Centre on Pomegranate has made significant strides in understanding and managing critical diseases that affect pomegranate cultivation. Research efforts have focused extensively on bacterial blight, which remains one of the most destructive challenges faced by pomegranate growers. Scientists have developed integrated management strategies combining cultural practices, chemical interventions, and biological control methods to mitigate this disease. Similarly, research on wilt complex and stem borer has led to improved diagnostic protocols and management recommendations. These achievements have directly contributed to reducing crop losses and enhancing the sustainability of pomegranate production across major growing regions in Maharashtra and beyond.
Soil and water management research at the centre has yielded practical innovations for pomegranate orchards. Studies on moisture conservation through mulching techniques have helped farmers optimize water usage in the semi-arid conditions typical of the Solapur region. Research on irrigation scheduling and drip systems has enabled more efficient water application, reducing waste while maintaining fruit quality. The centre has also investigated the use of shade nets and other protective structures to mitigate environmental stress. These soil and water management achievements have been particularly valuable for small and marginal farmers who face the brunt of erratic rainfall and limited irrigation resources.
The centre has developed and refined several improved production technologies that have been transferred to farming communities. Research on nutrient management, canopy architecture, and pruning practices has helped standardize orchard management protocols for higher yields and better fruit quality. Post-harvest handling and storage research has addressed the critical issue of fruit shelf life, enabling better market access for growers. The centre's achievements in developing cost-effective cultivation practices have been disseminated through training programs, advisory services, and farmer field schools, ensuring that laboratory research translates into tangible benefits at the farm level.
Breeding and genetic resource management form a cornerstone of the centre's research achievements. Scientists have worked on collection, characterization, and conservation of pomegranate germplasm, building a valuable genetic repository for future breeding programs. Evaluation of different varieties for yield potential, disease resistance, and fruit quality parameters has provided farmers with evidence-based recommendations for variety selection. The centre has also contributed to understanding the crop's response to abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity. These genetic and breeding achievements ensure the long-term resilience and productivity of pomegranate cultivation in the face of changing climatic conditions.
Crop Improvement
Research efforts have focused on developing and evaluating pomegranate varieties with improved fruit quality, yield potential, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Germplasm collection and characterization form a core part of this work.
Pest & Disease Management
The centre has documented integrated management strategies for major pomegranate pests and diseases, including bacterial blight and fruit borer. These findings support growers in reducing crop losses through timely interventions.
Production Technology
Studies on orchard management, irrigation scheduling, nutrient management, and canopy architecture have yielded practical recommendations that enhance productivity and fruit quality under Indian growing conditions.
Post-Harvest & Value Addition
Investigations into storage behaviour, packaging, and minimal processing of pomegranate have generated insights that help extend shelf life and reduce post-harvest losses along the supply chain.
